The story of me, swimming!
I have been swimming for about five years now. It has been a very great adventure. I remember, I was only comfortable swimming in breaststroke. Even with breaststroke, I could barely finish a lap of 25 yard! When I swam freestyle, my heart was about to stop at the end of each lap and I was switching immediately back to breaststroke to calm it down.
One day, I read a statement saying: NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE! In my head the first thing I thought of was that I can not finish two laps of freestyle !!! So for me, finishing laps in freestyle was one of the impossibilities. This was turning in my head for a bit, how could be swimming be impossible for me when impossible never exists!! I said: maybe I should give a bit of practice.
My exercises started like this: I swam at our home swimming pool (about 12.5 yards), one lap of freestyle with a break of one of lap breaststroke. Then 2 laps of freestyle followed up by a lap of breaststroke and went on. After a while, I started swimming at the 25 yards swimming pool at Ryerson University (in Toronto). Seriously, I could not do even one lap! The first few rounds, finishing the lap was impossible ... really it was !! but I kept on going!! It was way better but I didn't see any improvements for some time. I could see my heart can't really catch up though I was trying to do more laps.
Then, I started working-out outside the pool such as group classes, little bit of weight lifting and running on days that I was not swimming. My trainings continued on for a while and the result was that I could swim for 40 minutes in freestyle in 50 meters swimming pool without stopping!
I proved to myself that indeed nothing is impossible even swimming in freestyle!
Now a days, I don't push myself so hard. I swim at University of Toronto, 50 meters pool, on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 20 to 30 minutes. I am a bit slow since I was not swimming at all in the winter due to very bad winter (not a good excuse, I know!!!). I was not swimming, but I was active, doing a lot of boot camp classes and others.
I swim 20 laps in 20 minutes now. It is pretty good! No? Really, all I wanted to say to you was that you can do anything you want, ANYTHING! Impossibilities can be turned to possibilities with a little bit of effort!
This is where I swim now, I swim in second fast lane! Lesson learned: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND JUST PUSH!
